Mas Comtal

Description and History

At the edge of the Garraf Massif is a hill with 40 hectares of vines at 350 meters above sea level. Each hectare is dedicated exclusively to winegrowing. This is the Mas Comtal estate, located in the village of Avinyonet del Penedès. Founded in the early 1980s by the brothers Albert and Joan Milà, the winery produces exceptional, unmistakable wines that are a true expression of the land.

Albert Milà currently manages the winery and the vineyards. He heads the family business and, along with his team, produces organic wines that bear the winemaker's signature. Although the family began making wines fairly recently, the historical roots of the estate itself go back to the Roman Empire when Mas Comtal was a mutatio, a type of roadside inn for weary travelers and their animals. Over the centuries, the estate underwent countless transformations. During the 19th century, the Milà family bought the estate and began selling wine in bulk. From 1966 to 1983, they took their grapes to the Covides winemaking cooperative, and until 1992, they sold them to various wine producers. In 1993, Mas Comtal embarked on its own winemaking adventure.

Nowadays, Mas Comtal unites quality and tradition, art and gastronomy, and – most importantly – respect for the environment in order to produce truly expressive terroir-driven wines. The wines that form part of Qalidès come from the following terroir: Vinyes Mas Comtal

Varieties and Production

Close proximity to the sea mitigates the influence of the cold northern winds that blow in from the imposing Montserrat mountain. This microclimate provides ideal winegrowing conditions, marked by porous, calcareous soils that are perfect for growing 8 different varieties: 3 whites and 5 reds. The most widely planted varieties and those that yield the most expressive wines include the whites Xarel·lo and Chardonnay and the reds Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Wine Characteristics

Mas Comtal produces winemaker-driven organic wines full of character that are expressive, full-bodied and richly aromatic. Starting with the 2010 harvest, the winery embarked on a new adventure: Gran Angular. The goal of this project is to develop a new range of experimental micro-productions that provide the most inquisitive and discerning wine lovers with truly unique and free-spirited wines. Mas Comtal begins this more experimental stage filled with the desire to share its excitement and passion for the world of wine.
