This past Friday 20th of January, Qalidès, the wine cellars association, has chosen the new president of the organization. The elections were held in the rural property of Santa Margarida d’Agulladolç, in Alt Penedès. The elected president was Marcelo Desvalls, representant of the Viladellops wine cellar, who will replace Mireia Torres after four years of presidency. Desvalls will occupy the presidency during the following two years, and thus, he becomes the third president of the Qalidès history, an association born in 2004 which nowadays is composed by fourteen family wineries.

Marcelo Desvalls is the owner of Viladellops wine cellar, a winery which is strongly related to the history of Olèrdola’s Castle. From 2007 and onwards, Viladellops wine cellar has obtained the 100% ecological certificate, and counts with a large experience in the vine producing experimentation. They bet for autochthonous varieties which grow in very special calcareous soils in the Massís Garraf’s area. Their wines are a clear referent of those quality wines that can be found in El Penedès.

Since February 2013, Qalidès presidency has been occupied by Mireia Torres. It was a total of four years which have been highly productive for the association. During this period, a large range of activities have been organised with the main objective to promote all types of wines that belong to Qalidès association.

One of the most highlighted and original activities have been the Speed Tastings, a new modern way of tasting which attracts new costumers to the world of wine. There has been a total of three Speed Tastings, and all of them have been granted with the presence of Jordi Vilà, a chef with a Michelin Star, and Andrea Tumbarello, a well-known Italian chef. In addition, recently Qalidès has held innovating activities such as "7 balls, 7 vins i 7 balls de swing" in the widely-known Bardot’s restaurant.

The pairings have also been highlighted activities during the Torres’ presidency, as they proof it with the several collaborations with excellent Barcelonan restaurants such as El Principal, the Spoonik, the Louis 1865 of Fàbrica Moritz or the Japanese Fukamura.

In a more professional and academic level, there have been organised two editions of “Debats Qalidès”, a strategic bet to popularise “the society of the vine-producing” which makes special wines of the several D.O. The first debate was named “The influence of the soil on the expression of the wines”, and the second one was titled “The old wine yards: a myth?” The association also participated in summer courses held by the University of Barcelona, which consisted of two theoretical and practical sessions titled “Qalidès: A Project which respects the wine and the grapes”.

Concurrently to all those activities, Mireia Torres was also been working in the renewal of the Qalidès website, helped by Dinàmic Comunicació and Contem Assessors, so as to improve the communication and the management of the site. The new president, Marcelo Desvalls, has agreed to continue putting forward this method of working in order to consolidate Qalidès as one of the great references in the Catalan vine-producing world.

mtmnpqalidesThe assembly of Qalidès, Terrers del Penedès has chosen the presidency and board for the next two years. By absolute majority, the members of the association voted the renewal of Mireia Torres as the president of Qalidès for a period of two years, in which she will be accompanied by her current secretary and her current treasurer, Joan Huguet and Xavier Gramona respectively.

Since Mireia Torres was nominated president, on February 1, 2013, the association of Qalidès, Terrers del Penedès, has added two new partners: Mas Candí and Parés Baltà, and has worked hard to spread the entity, its wineries and their wines through events and various actions.

As an important internal project, the website of Qalidès has been renewed. All the online information of the cellars was adapted in order to address both wine enthusiasts, and professionals of the sector.

As the most outstanding and innovative activity, the association of Qalidès organized, for the very first time in Spain, the Speed Tasting, a new way of tasting which aims to bring the world of wine to new consumers. Two editions of Speed Tasting have been so far celebrated in Catalonia's Capital, Barcelona.

The first edition "Debat Qalidès" was organized under the title "The influence of the soil in the expression of wines" to address to a more professional public. The event counted on the presence of by M. Claude and Mme. Lydia Bourguignon as the main speakers, and with the presence of Mr. Jaume Boixadera, the head of Soil and Environmental Services Management and Agricultural Production of the Generalitat of Catalonia, who led a subsequent debate.

The association of Qalidès continued the professional development by creating a course in the University of Barcelona (UB) during the summer. Moreover, the association participated in two theoretical and practical sessions called Qalidès: "Draft respect to the vineyard and grape". These two sessions were part of the course "The art of good wine", which was held on 15 and 17 July in the Vinseum Museum of Vilafranca del Penedès.

On a more local level, it was organized the "Dimarts Qalidès" (Qalidès Tuesdays) in the Taverna del Vinseum. During 13 weeks, the audience could enjoy the talks and tastings of wines that the processors and each winery owners conducted to a totally devoted audience.

Objective: To strengthen the territory

After the voting, Mireia Torres announced her will to keep publicizing Qalidès, and wineries that are part of both consumers and professionals in the hotel industry and catering.

Qalidès, Terrers del Penedès was founded in 2004 with the aim of bringing together different wineries that were "interested in displaying a 'Penedès' concerned about preserving a culture of respectful with the environment and landscape and position their estate wines among the best in the world" . The wineries that today are part of the entity are:  Huguet de Can Feixes, Albet and Noya, Mas Comtal, Jean Leon, Gramona, Miguel Torres, Can Ràfols dels Caus, Jané Ventura, Avgvstvs Forvm, Castellroig Sabaté-Coca, Finca Viladellops Mas Candí, Grizzly and Parés Baltà.

Dinàmic Comunicació, will remain the agency responsible for managing communication of the association, both internally and externally, and to maintain regular contacts with the specialized press.

foto tast centenari qalidesThe past 15th September, the Jané Ventura's cellar brought together more than 200 people, including customers, distributors, press and friends –some from different European countries – in what was the main event of the centenary of the founding of the winery and its connection to the world of wine.

The Event took place in Finca Mas Vilella, a Catalan farmhouse located in La Bisbal del Penedès, property of Jané Ventura's family and surrounded by vineyards.

The event started with the welcoming speech of Gerard Jané, who is the fourth generation winemaker and current manager of the winery Jané Ventura, and his father Benjamí Jané Ventura, who is from the previous generation of winemakers and who opted to produce quality wines, bottled and under a certificate of origin.

After the speech, the guests toasted with 'cava' from the centenary "1914 de Jané Ventura Gran Reserva Vintage 2007", a 'cava' elaborated for the occasion, a limited edition for the centenary, which included the production of 1914 bottles and 500 Magnum.

In a showroom format, the guests enjoyed a tasting of 30 wines and 'cavas' from previous years and special editions, some of them from the 'familiar collection' and that they could taste following a recommended order.

The association Terra i Taula, a union of producers and chefs from Baix Penedès, were in charge of elaborating the food for the occasion, with some "tapas" and "coques de recapte" typical from the area.

Likewise, it could be tasted a scoop, Malvasia de Sitges "dolça 2013", which is scheduled to release this upcoming fall.

Four generations of the family have experienced first hand the great revolution of viticulture and oenology in our country.

Albet i Noya, a cellar that is already well known for being a pioneer in ecological wines in Catalonia and throughout Spain, has a wine producing tradition that goes back four generations and has vast experience with over 36 years producing ecological wines.
In line with its philosophy of respecting the environment, at the beginning of 2013 it contracted an "Energy Accounting" service through the Macbrabant company.

The contracted service consisted of monitoring electricity consumption through different meters. In this way we detect the real power used in each area and at all times. The active and reactive energy consumptions and therefore be able to detect anomalous consumption.
By checking that the invoicing was right, we could optimise the contract with the supplying company.
Once the necessary changes were made, the electricity consumption saving only in the second quarter of 2013, in comparison to the same period in 2012, was 14%.

Later on, and from the information registered about the day to day power demand, we could adjust the contracted power downwards, a fact that has already turned into additional savings and an important reduction in CO2 emissions for this concept.
Albet i Noya will continue controlling the energy consumption in order to manage it better and optimise it through the implementation of "Good environmental practices " and continue advancing in energy efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions.

The Dimarts Qalidès (Qalidès Tuesdays) wine tasting once again packed the Taverna de Vinseum, drawing a huge crowd eager to attend the last event of this edition. For 12 weeks, the wineries that form part of Qalidès, Terrers del Penedès have shared the history of their wineries, fascinating anecdotes and – above all else – a taste of their most highly prized wines – their terroir wines – with more than 400 people.

Mireia Torres, president of Qalidès and part of the fifth generation to head the Miguel Torres winery, presented five single vineyard wines that carry the D.O. Penedès designation: Waltraud, Fransola, Mas Borràs, Mas La Plana and Reserva Real.

As spokesperson for the Torres family, she emphasized the composition of each terroir, the winemaking process, the aging of the wines and the story behind each one.

Waltraud: The wine is a tribute to her mother, Waltraud. Her German roots found a new home in the Penedès, much like those of the Riesling vines that produce this perfumed wine of subtle elegance.

Fransola: Listening to nature is the secret to obtaining the best wines. This is why, more than twenty years ago, Miguel Torres selected the exceptional land surrounding Fransola, a historical estate located in one of the highest areas of the Penedès. Cold nights and mild days provide an excellent winegrowing climate, resulting in the finest Sauvignon Blanc and Parellada grapes, which go into making this elegant and balanced wine.

Mas Borràs: This Pinot Noir is a single vineyard wine made from grapes grown in the Penedès. Located in Santa Maria de Miralles, at 520 meters above sea level, the vineyard experiences cool summer nights, which allows these delicate grapes to ripen gradually and evenly. Mas Borràs is currently one of the few Pinot Noir made in Spain.

Mas La Plana: More than three decades ago, a mysterious wine was born in Spain. The label: black. The bottle: Burgundy. The variety: Cabernet Sauvignon. Few people had faith in the project. Certainly no one could have predicted its triumph over the world's most famous wines at a blind tasting in Paris in 1979. This marked the beginning of a new era.

Reserva Real: Reserva Real was born after His Majesty King Juan Carlos visited the Miguel Torres winery in 1995. It is one of the most exclusive, limited-production wines in all of Spain. The wine is made from the finest selection of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grown on the small estate of San Joan de Mediona, which includes a little, 11th-century chapel in an early Romanesque style.

At the end of the tasting, Mireia Torres thanked everyone for participating in these events – a must for anyone interested in the best wines the Penedès has to offer. Having the producers on hand is something that sets these wine tastings apart and adds value to the entire Dimarts Qalidès series.

The Qalidès Association described the collaboration with Taverna de Vinseum as "highly satisfactory" in helping the organization achieve its goals of "promoting sustainable and organic viticulture as well as having people discover the personality and exceptional quality of the wines that were tasted during the two editions of the series."

The Qalidès president underscored the importance of wine tourism as a through line that connects the Penedès, the wines, the wineries and Qalidès. She invited everyone in attendance to visit the wineries for a closer, more in-depth look at each family's philosophy and their wines.

Taverna de Vinseum

Everyone at Taverna de Vinseum is very pleased, both with how well the public received the wine tastings – a full house every time – and how involved the wineries were in the events. "It is unusual for the end consumer to come into such direct contact with those responsible for running a prestigious winery, who can explain their philosophy and working process better than anyone," said Ton Colet, sommelier at Taverna de Vinseum.

About Qalidès

Qalidès is an association of wineries based in the Penedès that champion the character and quality of Penedès wines. They do so in an environmentally conscious manner that respects the identity of the landscape and the wealth of a region with a wine history that spans 2500 years.

Qalidès grow by yet another member: the Mas Candí winery. Including the newest member, Qalidès now comprises thirteen wineries that share a philosophy steeped in respect for the vineyard, the grapes and their environment. Mas Candí is a collaborative project by four young winegrowers who produce wines from local varieties without the use of chemical fertilizers or insecticides.

The Qalidès committee unanimously approved its membership during the association's General Meeting on October 25th, 2013. Mas Candí might be the youngest winery in the association, but its wines are already well known throughout Spain.

Promoting awareness of terroir wines

One of the main proposals that Mireia Torres put forth during her candidacy was to increase the visibility of the association on an institutional level. The idea is to encourage wineries to join Qalidès and see it as an asset in promoting the association's terroir wines. Having Mas Candí join the association reflects this philosophy, and Qalidès hopes more wineries will do so in the future.

The association's next General Meeting, scheduled for January 2014, will be the first institutional event that the new member will officially participate in.

The history of Mas Candí

The Mas Candí winery is located in Les Gunyoles d'Avinyonet, at the edge of the Garraf Massif nature reserve. Mas Candí springs from the curiosity and passion of a young group of winegrowers. Their goal in opening the winery in 2006 was to produce wines from the vineyards that their families had worked for generations. Utmost respect for the vineyard, the grape and its environment informs their guiding philosophy in an effort to produce wines that reflect the true character of the region.

The following are among Mas Candí's most remarkable wines: Mas Candí QX (Quatre Xarel·los or four varieties of Xarel·lo), Mas Candí Ovella Negra (white Grenache), Mas Candí Les Forques and Mas Candí Sòl + Sol.

About Qalidès

Qalidès, Terrers del Penedès was established in 2004 with the goal of bringing together different wineries that share an "interest in showing how the Penedès region strives to preserve a form of winegrowing that upholds the integrity of the environment and the landscape, as well as in positioning their single vineyard wines among the best in the world."

The association currently includes 13 member wineries: Can Feixes, Albet i Noya, Mas Comtal, Jean Leon, Gramona, Miguel Torres, Can Ràfols dels Caus, Jané Ventura, Avgvstvs Forvm, Castellroig-Finca Sabaté i Coca, Finca Viladellops, Pardas and Mas Candí.

Although Finca Viladellops has grown grapes since 1877, the winery didn't start producing wines under their own brand until 1999. From that moment on, Finca Viladellops wines gained both quality and market recognition until the winery positioned itself as one of the most celebrated brands in the Penedès appellation of origin.

During the wine tasting, part of a Qalidès event series held every Tuesday until November 12th at the Taverna de Vinseum in Vilafranca, the winery's owner Marcelo Desvalls explained his fascinating family history, tracing it back to the 12th century. He also espoused the quality of Penedès wines, which is increasingly recognized on an international level. Desvalls also encouraged other wineries to join Qalidès and see it as an asset in promoting the association's terroir wines. Finca Viladellops is a certified organic winegrower.

Wines with great personality

The estate extends across 500 hectares, but only 55 (or 12%) are used for winegrowing. The winery grows local varieties, predominantly Grenache and Xarel·lo, including the very rare Xarel·lo rosé. By focusing on a small area, the winery can guarantee grapes of the highest quality and wines with personality. The extremely calcareous soils are very poor, resulting in good vineyard vigor and small clusters that reach an excellent balance in terms of acidity and ripeness.

Marcelo Desvalls presented the Finca Viladellops Xarel·lo to a packed room. Everything was in place for the tasting. The wine has a brilliant gold color, a full and complex palate, and a floral, creamy aroma that continues to unfold in the glass. The Viladellops Xarel·lo also expresses the minerality and salt present in the terrain, which was once under the sea. Participants then tasted the Finca Viladellops Tinto, a red defined by mineral and red fruit aromas, potent on the palate with notes of toast and licorice. And last but not least, Turó de les Abelles, an intense wine displaying notes of toast and licorice, mouth-filling and richly textured. Participants were very impressed by the quality of the three wines.

Winegrowing with almost no technological intervention in the production process: this is the underlying premise of Celler Pardas, one of the Qalidès member wineries. Headed by the enologist Ramon Parera and the agronomist Jordi Arnan, Pardas has been highly successful since its inception in 1996. On Tuesday, October 29th, Pardas presented its most exceptional Qalidès wines as part of the second edition of Qalidès wine tastings, held at the Taverna de Vinseum in Vilafranca del Penedès.

The winery practices an austere form of viticulture and only works with its own grapes, personally grown in dry-farmed vineyards on the family-owned estate of Can Comas in Torrelavit.

The idea for Pardas began to take shape in 1996 when Ramon Parera and Jordi Arnan bought the Can Comas estate. They work around 70 hectares divided into approximately 90 plots defined by radically different terroirs, which make it possible to grow both local and foreign varieties.

The result? Singular wines with clearly defined character. This is how Ramon Parera described his wines to participants:

Pardas Xarel·lo, pure minerality. This particular trait defines the wine through and through: ripe pineapple, a touch of vineyard peach and dried figs.
Pardas Xarel·lo Aspriu, a very intense, full wine with good acidity and freshness. Elegant and very balanced. Pairs with sushi, sashimi, pork, foie, stews and aged cheeses.
Pardas Collita Roja, intense and balsamic nose. Fresh red fruit, licorice, spices – a particularly strong peppery presence – hints of bay leaf and grain. Smooth and lively entry in keeping with the nose.
Pardas Negre Franc, elegant black cherry hue, quite dense, and an intense, very fragrant and immediate nose. Well defined balsamic undertones.
Pardas Aspriu Negre, intense, voluptuous, balsamic and deep. Full, exuberant and potent midpalate. Very ripe black fruit.

About Qalidès

Pardas is one of twelve wineries that make up Qalidès. The second edition of Dimarts Qalidès (Qalidès Tuesdays), a series of wine tastings held at Taverna de Vinseum, kicked off on October 8th. The wine tastings will take place every Tuesday at 8pm until November 12th, featuring the direct participation of the winemakers.
Qalidès is an association of wineries based in the Penedès that champion the character and quality of Penedès wines. They do so in an environmentally conscious manner that respects the identity of the landscape and the wealth of a region with a wine history spanning 2500 years.

Mireia Torres, the association's current president, and the member wineries have reaffirmed the objectives of Qalidès: to promote sustainable viticulture and greater awareness of the unique personality of terroir-driven wines as well as attract visitors to the Penedès region by offering exceptional wine tourism experiences built around locally sourced products.

The following wineries make up Qalidès: Albet i Noya, Avgvstvs Forvm, Can Feixes, Can Ràfols dels Caus, Castellroig-Finca Sabaté i Coca, Gramona, Jané Ventura, Jean Leon, Mas Comtal, Miguel Torres, Pardas and Finca Viladellops.

The Avgvstvs Forvm winery and winemaker Enric Roca presented five unique, character-driven wines during Tuesday night's event at Taverna de Vinseum in Vilafranca del Penedès as part of the Qalidès wine tasting series.

Avgvstvs Xarel·lo, Avgvstvs Chardonnay, Avgvstvs Cabernet Franc, Avgvstvs Trajanvs and Avgvstvs Magnum IV comprised the terroir wines featured at the November 5th event that brought together winemakers and the general public. The event once again drew a full house. The last tasting of the season on November 12th will feature the wines of the Miguel Torres winery.

A winery along the ancient Via Augusta

The Roca family has managed the family-owned winery since its inception. Although the Avgvstvs winery got its start in the early 1980s, the Les Deveses estate, where the winery has most of its vineyards, bears the traces of the ancient Via Augusta that cut across Roman-era Hispania from north to south. This piece of history not only gives the winery its name, but also informs its philosophy, based on traditional winegrowing in harmony with the natural surroundings.

Located right outside Sant Vincenç de Calders and overlooking the Mediterranean, the winery Avgvstvs Forvm stands for high-quality wines that gain their wonderful expressiveness from the influence of the sea and the soil composition of vineyards mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Chardonnay. The varieties grow in rocky, shallow and calcareous soils.

Avgvstvs Wines

Avgvstvs Xarel.lo displays remarkable ripe fruit notes and elegant citrus and floral nuances. The wine is potent and sweet, creamy on entry followed by a citrus impression on the palate.
Avgvstvs Chardonnay is a very deep, expansive wine with tropical fruit and citrus notes. Elegant and wonderfully balanced, creamy and buttery due to aging in French oak.
Avgvstvs Cabernet Franc is an exceptional Cabernet Franc varietal. Aged for 12-15 months in French oak, the wine is character-driven with great elegance and structure.
Avgvstvs Trajanvs is elegant, silky, marked by great depth and notes of leather, tobacco, licorice, spices and cocoa. Elegantly oaked with splendid notes of very ripe fruit.
Avgvstvs Mágnum IV displays wonderfully diverse aromas thanks to its blend of 6 varieties. Deep aromas of small, ripe red fruit. An elegant, potent wine.

On November 12th, Mireia Torres, Qalidès president and member of the Torres family, will present wines produced by her family's winery Miguel Torres, bringing the second and final edition of Dimarts Qalidès (Qalidès Tuesdays) to a close.
